25 Short, Self Motivation Quotes to Keep You Going

The hardest part about changing any part of your life — whether it’s your body, mindset, work ethic, or routine — is overcoming the mental obstacles that hold you back. That’s why I’ve found self motivation quotes to be surprisingly powerful. They’re not just feel-good phrases — they can reshape the way you talk to yourself, which is often the biggest hurdle to change.

If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say:

  • I just can’t stay focused. I don’t have it in me.”,
  • I’m just not the kind of person that can go to the gym every day.“,
  • Maybe you could work those kinds of hours, but I just can’t.
  • That’s great that you can eat healthy. But I could never live like that.”

I would be on a beach somewhere, wondering why people keep making negative assumptions about themselves.

I can’t, I can’t, I can’t.” Now, I get it. I’ve been there. I used to say the exact same things to myself. I used to have countless goals and fantasies about what I wanted to do with my life, how I wanted to live, and how I wanted to look. But whenever I really thought about how I would get there, it felt completely out of reach, as I was telling myself that I lacked the capacity to achieve what I wanted.

A big part of what allowed me to overcome these mental obstacles was to start changing the way that I talk to myself. I know, it’s easier said than done. But…by changing the content you view, this can be achieved.

Something as simple as reading affirmative self-motivation quotes daily can make an immense difference. You can make them your lock screen, place them on your to-do list, or even put them on your mirror. The bottom line is that reading these quotes can encourage you to be kinder to yourself, give yourself grace, and ultimately, to stay motivated.

This is why I have put together this comprehensive list of self-motivation quotes. Feel free to save them for your own personal use, or return to this post if you feel like you need an extra boost in overcoming self-doubt.

Whether you’re just starting something new, feeling stuck, or working through self-doubt, these gentle reminders are here to ground you. Think of them as little notes from your best self — the part of you that believes, keeps going, and knows your worth.

Self Motivation Quotes for Starting Fresh and Taking Action

1.

The best time to plant an oak tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.

Unknown

  • This is one of my favourite quotes. A huge part of what makes it so difficult to make the first steps toward any goal is feeling like it’s too late to begin. This insightful quote reminds us to just start, regardless of how far behind we may feel, or whether we feel like we may have hit a roadblock in our progress.

2.

What is not started today is never finished tomorrow.”

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

  • What a great way to encourage yourself to take the first step. It is very easy to constantly put off starting certain projects or making progress toward our goals. By always telling yourself that you will “just do it tomorrow“, it will never get done.

3.

You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

Martin Luther King Jr.

  • When starting anything from scratch, we often struggle to begin when we cannot see the entire picture. This note to yourself reminds you that sometimes, that is okay. Sometimes, we will never be able to know how a particular decision, project, or goal will ultimately play out. But never acting at all due to this uncertainty will only ensure that these goals are never accomplished.

4.

Start small. Start scared. Just start.

Unknown

  • I’m sure we would all like to start making progress toward our goals from the perfect position. That is, with the perfect mentality, the perfect financial situation, or even the perfect social support system. However, this helpful reminder prompts us to begin when things may not be ideal for us. The truth is, there is never going to be a perfect time to start, and by constantly waiting for circumstances to change, we are simply allowing time to pass us by.

5.

Every day is a chance to begin again.”

Unknown

  • Reminding yourself of this simple fact is an excellent way to start taking action. Oftentimes, when things don’t go as planned, it is easy to think: “Well, I already messed up. Might as well keep doing the same thing tomorrow.” For instance, if you were trying to watch what you were eating, and then lost a bit of control one day and ate more than you had planned. Rather than spending days ruminating on this one mistake, remind yourself that tomorrow is a new day, and you can do better.

Mindset Quotes for Overcoming Self-Doubt

6.

Your inner critic is loud, but it isn’t wise.

Unknown

  • I’m sure some of you have heard the saying, “We are our own worst critic.” And it really is true. Sometimes, self-criticism can be productive, as it can allow you to highlight problematic areas in performance and improve. However, this self-criticism is by no means objective. In fact, a lot of the time, it can have a negativity bias, nitpicking us apart. This is why it is important to remember that this self-criticism is not always (and often not) accurate. Treating it like it is may very well be contributing to self-doubt, and in turn, your motivation to begin.

7.

Remember all the things you thought you couldn’t do — and did anyway.”

Unknown

  • One of the things we do in therapy is challenge assumptions and thought patterns. For example, someone may be stuck on the thought: “I could never lose weight the way that she did. I just don’t have the discipline“. Keeping this insightful quote in mind is a great way to challenge this assumption that you “could never” do something. For instance, recalling the time that you studied for your chemistry test a little bit every day until you aced it — that takes discipline!

8.

“Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.”

Suzy Kassem

  • This quote serves as a friendly reminder that failure is not something to be feared. If you were to go around and ask the most successful people how many times they had to fail at something before succeeding, you would be very surprised. Failure should not be the factor that kills our dreams, as long as you start to look at it as a step, rather than a roadblock. It is when we doubt our ability to overcome challenges and failures that dreams are killed.

9.

Confidence is built by doing the thing you’re scared to do.

Unknown

  • We’re not always going to feel confident stepping into new territory. I mean, if you’re doing something for the first time, why would you feel completely confident? But, it is crucial not to allow this uncertainty to deter you from starting. With every attempt at this new thing (i.e., whether it be going to the gym, making healthy meals, starting a business, etc.), you will notice yourself feeling more confident. It is okay to feel scared.

10.

Impostor syndrome means you’re growing — not that you’re unqualified.”

Unknown

  • Now, this is a huge one. Whether we are stepping into a new job, climbing the corporate ladder, or in the early stages of success in a personal goal, it is easy to feel impostor syndrome. But, it is important to remember that these feelings of not belonging somewhere, or not deserving something, have been created in your mind — they are not a reflection of reality. We must remember that these feelings are most often a result of personal growth. I mean, if you were always in a room where you felt 100% confident, it would be unlikely that we would see any progress.

Self Motivating Quotes for Patience and Progress

11.

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.

— Robert Collier

  • This quote serves as a meaningful reminder that it is the baby steps (i.e., steps that may not seem meaningful in the moment) that allow you to reach your goals. By continuing to have patience while continuing your small efforts daily, you will be surprised at how much you can accomplish.

12.

It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. It’s what we do consistently.

Tony Robbins

  • Similarly to the previous quote, this one reminds you of the importance of consistency. It’s super easy to hit the gym once or twice, not see any results, and dismiss the gym’s ability to change your body. But with a little patience and consistency, you will see that this is simply not the case.

13.

Healing isn’t linear. Growth isn’t either.

Unknown

  • It is important to remember that our journey to change is not going to be the same as our friend’s. It’s not going to be the same as the fitness influencer you’ve been watching on TikTok. And it certainly isn’t going to be a straightforward path. By expecting changes to be achieved in a linear fashion, it is easy to become demotivated. Remember to be patient, as no one’s journey is going to be the same.

14.

Keep showing up. That’s all you have to do. Show up, do the work, and let go of the outcome.

Unknown

  • It can be extremely challenging to stay motivated when you feel like your efforts are not resulting in visible progress. However, the key to seeing this progress that you desire is not to stop trying. It is to keep showing up. I frequently recite this quote to myself when I feel like I’m on the verge of quitting — and trust me, it really helps.

15.

“The day you plant the seed is not the day you eat the fruit.”

Fabienne Fredrickson

  • Another very helpful reminder that you are not always going to see results right away. Whether it be results from the gym, changes in eating patterns, or your memory retention for your exam coming up — these things take time. Reminding yourself of this very fact daily will help to foster the patience you need to wait for success.

Motivational Quotes for Resilience and Bouncing Back

16.

There’s no limit to how many times you can start over.”

Unknown

  • Now this one really speaks for itself. And I know, no one enjoys having to start from scratch after working hard toward something you desire. But the reality is, you might just have to, and that’s okay. It’s okay to realize two years into college that you have no desire to be a veterinarian and would prefer to change your major to psychology. It’s okay to gain a few pounds on vacation after losing a ton of weight. What matters is your ability to bounce back and start again — regardless of how shitty it might feel.

17.

Even when you slip, the path behind you doesn’t disappear.

Unknown

  • This is a fancy way of reminding us that a single slip-up is not defining. All of the progress that you’ve made towards whatever goal you may have is not going to be erased by a single mistake — or even two or three. As long as you get back up and pick things up where you left off, everything will be okay.

18.

“Fall down seven times, stand up eight.”

Japanese Proverb

  • Once again, what matters more than the number of failures we may face is our ability to get right back up and try again. Our ability to bounce back after numerous setbacks (even if it is seven or eight of them) is what really defines our ability to be successful.

19.

You don’t have to get back to who you were — you can grow into someone new.

Unknown

  • It’s easy to look back at a time when you may have viewed yourself as the more ideal version of you — more successful, more attractive…just better overall. However, it is not productive to fixate on reproducing that past version of you. Sometimes, this is not always possible…we change! Rather than focusing on “getting back to who you were“, be okay with becoming someone new. Who knows, you could be even better than before!

20.

Your comeback doesn’t have to be loud to be real.

Unknown

  • In other words, how others perceive your comeback is irrelevant. It is easy to conjure up fantasies about how your family, friends, and maybe even those who have wronged you, will see you when you’ve bounced back. But in reality, the way that this comeback looks does not matter. What matters is that you did it — whether or not others notice.

Self Motivation Quotes for Self Love and Compassion

21.

Talk to yourself like someone you love.

Brené Brown

  • It is so easy to be relentlessly hard on ourselves, especially when we’re in the process of working toward our goals. A helpful strategy to shift the tone of this negative self-talk is to treat yourself like you would treat a loved one. Speak to yourself like you would speak to your mom, your husband, or your best friend. You wouldn’t tell your closest friend that you think they are incapable of reaching their goals — you would probably tell them that they can! Start treating yourself the same way.

22.

Forgive yourself for not knowing what you didn’t know before.

Unknown

  • I cannot express to you how many times I’ve heard people beat themselves up over past mistakes — not going to the gym earlier, not having the motivation to start school earlier, wishing they had started taking their health more seriously earlier…and the list goes on. The truth is, you didn’t know back then. You didn’t know how much these goals were going to mean to you in the future, and that is okay. Forgive yourself and start now.

23.

You don’t have to be everything to be enough.”

Unknown

  • Even though it is important to strive to be the best version of yourself, that does not mean you are not enough in the present. It is important to remember that you now deserve the same love, respect, and grace as the elevated version of yourself that you envision.

24.

You have been criticizing yourself for years, and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens.

Louise Hay

  • Louise Hay kindly reminds us here of the way that self-criticism can backfire. There is a difference between blindly accepting our problematic flaws and being overly critical of the parts of ourselves that make us unique. Although focusing on growth is important, it is just as crucial not to lose sight of who you are in the present.

25.

Don’t wait on someone else to validate you. That’s your job.

Unknown

  • It is easy to base our self-worth on the way that others perceive us. I mean, I get it. When you’ve worked so hard to achieve something, whether it be your body, your college degree, or your promotion at work, sometimes it feels good to feel validated by our friends and family. The truth is, you’re not always going to have someone there to high-five you for a job well done. Meaning, it is important to validate yourself.

Keep These Words Close.

Remember, the way you speak to yourself matters more than you think. These self motivation quotes aren’t just words — they’re reminders of your strength, your worth, and your ability to keep going, even when it feels hard. Save the ones that speak to you, revisit them often, and let them become part of your inner voice.

If you found this post helpful, share it with someone who could use a little self-encouragement — or save it for the next time you need a reminder to keep showing up.
